Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba
w/ Dana Lubow & The Bookmobile

Tuesday 10 July 2007 / 6-9pm
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City
3845 North Swan Street / 505.538.0101 / www.uufsc.com

Join us as we welcome the Caravanistas on their way to the Mexico border to run the gauntlet of US imperialism and the 40+ year long embargo of Cuba.

Bring a pot luck dish and hear the exploits and expectations of Caravanista veterans and novices, young and old.  Their stories are moving and their courage inspiring.  These folks are walking the walk!

And don't miss Kyle Johnson's interview with Dana Lubow.  Dana has purchased, outfitted, and is driving a bookmobile bound for Cuban villages and rural outposts as part of the Caravan.  The interview is now running on CATS / cable channel 17 or at www.radiofreesilver.com.

And, if you have Spanish language books suitable for a library that you would like to donate to the bookmobile, please do bring those along.

This marks the 18th Caravan to Cuba and dozens of vehicles from all over the United States and Canada will converge on the Mexico border to cross over and continue to Tampico Mexico with much appreciated humanitarian aid including medical supplies, computeres, electronics, office and educational supplies, bicycles and a long list of items that the US continues to deny to the cuban people with its odious blockade, now nearing 50 years.

4th of July Parade / Grant County - Past Present & Future
Wednesday 4 July 2007 / 9:30am
Staging area in the vicinity of Penny Park / Snappy Mart near Gough Park

The Grant County Chamber of Commerce defined theme for the 2007 parade is "Grant County - Past, Present & Future"

Read / Download our statement and parade handout here.

Well, we've liked Independence in the past and want it in the future but  we're presently confronted with corrupted elections, manipulated intelligence, constitutional violations, war crimes, abrogation of treaty obligations, stacking the Supreme Court with reactionary ideologues, partisan litmus tests for federal prosecutors, secrecy over everything and Nixonian stonewalling when all else fails.

We've decided that the one thing most necessary in the present to insure independence in the future as in the past is IMPEACHMENT.  It's right there in the Constitution.  Must have been a reason!  Use it or Lose it!  Impeach Now for the Future!

Join us in our participation in this years parade.  We will gather in the vicinity of 12th Street and Grant - near the Snappy Mart at 9:30am and the parade begins at 10am.

We will be handing out black arm bands to symbolize the dangers we face and while we encouage everyone  to focus on the matter of IMPEACHMENT as our theme, you are welcome to bring signs that relate to any of the war and social justice issues that concern you.

And remember our motto... Practice Peace.

4th of July Parade Update

photo credit - Elroy LimmerThis year marked GCPC's 4th year of participating
in the Grant County 4th of July Parade.

We found that the climate of the parade and it's onlookers was considerably changed from previous years when we were greeted more often with derisive comments and much less with encouragement and support.

The current national polls showing Bush's approval ratings in the mid 30% range (and as low as 31%) seem to be consistent with the responses of folks here in Grant County.
The GCPC contingent received much more applause and positive reaction than cat calls and derision.  Many of those who were vocal supporters of Bush and his dirty war are now mumbling under their breath as they realise the tide of puphoto credit - Elroy Limmerblic opinion has turned.

Most Americans oppose this war
and want the Troops Home Fast.

and GCPC's contingent, visit  the Tyler's Turn Blog.
Thanks to Elroy Limmer for the pics! Click to enlarge.

Pastors for Peace arrived safely in Cuba with their load of donations to the Cuban people

In June, GCPC and Pax Christi joined in support of the
Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba

We arranged a big potluck dinner and sendoff breakfast to fuel a group of hungry caravanistas on their way to their rendezvous in El Paso / Juarez with other caravans originating in various parts of the U.S.  At the potluck they gave us a history and current conditions of the Caravan along with their very moving personal experiences with the Caravan and other activism to spur discussion.

They made it across the border, down through western Mexico and on to Cuba delivering medical supplies, office and educational materials, bicycles, and other items that are hard to to obtain under the economic embargo.

Our hats are off to them for their dedication and daring as they ran the gauntlet of U.S. imperialism.

As we pursue our vision of a world at peace
, we find that many of our fellow citizens too easily forget or ignore the consequences of the acts of our government.  We thank and applaud Many Moons (Hwy 180 E in Arenas Valley) for their courage and commitment in providing a place where we can remind people on a daily basis and hopefully move them to see the reality of what is unjustly done in our name.

Grant County Peace Coalition - Mission Statement

We are a coalition of Grant County residents. We are non-partisan, multi-racial, multi-generational, and come from many backgrounds and beliefs.

As Americans, we seek a peaceful and just world safe from terrorism perpetrated by individuals, organizations, or states. We want the resources of our country to go towards making the world a better place for everyone.

We recognize there will be no lasting peace unless the dignity of every individual is upheld and basic human needs are met.

Towards this aim, we:

  • Call for an end to political, economic, and military aggression around the world
  • Work to defend civil liberties and human rights for all
  • Seek global peace through economic and social justice
  • Oppose all racial, ethnic, and religious bigotry and violence
  • Support a healthy environment and sustainable lifestyles

We strive to achieve these goals through education, community building, and direct non-violent action.
